Fusing a passion for music, food and entertainment, Redbones Blues Café has been a hub of cultural and culinary activity since December 1996. Paying homage to the café’s founders, the name “Redbones” is a nod to a term commonly used in the Southern United States and mirrors that of the Jamaican slang word, “Brownin,” which refers to people of mixed racial heritage.
Though the café strives to be a refuge from the chaos of city life, it simultaneously serves as a window into cosmopolitan life in the capital of Kingston, Jamaica. Playing host to a variety of events ranging from theatrical productions and live music to poetry readings and art exhibitions, Redbones manages to draw crowds of all ages.
Rich shades of red and earthy orange hues provide a colorful backdrop throughout the trendy café and lounge. Instrument-heavy Jazz music often wafts through the air as delicate streams of candlelight provide a romantic ambiance outdoors in the evening. Teardrop shaped chandeliers hang from the ceiling; memorabilia, such as guitars and album covers, punctuate the walls; and whimsical curves of art make each corner burst into life.
To be sure, Redbones Blues Café is not for the timid. Its noteworthy menu flirts with flavors both local and international. Sample codfish cakes with Scotch Bonnet Coulis as an appetizer, followed by penne pasta topped with chunks of Nova Scotia salmon, bell peppers, broccoli and cauliflower in a herb infused olive oil. Top it off with decadent flourless chocolate fudge cake or Redbones tiramisu.
As if to underscore the uniqueness of the venue, Redbones Blues Café features a wide palette of merchandise available for purchase. To highlight the artists and performers who made an impression on the café, “Redbones 15” is a hardcover coffee table book that offers a variety of essays, photographs, poems and commentary involved in the café’s inception through the year 2012. Additional souvenirs include a cd compilation of jazz and blues music, specially designed dominoes and keychains, paper weights and cloth bags.
